I am going on a cruise and I believe the laws vary depending on whether you are traveling by air or by land/sea. My cruise is from Jan.20-26 into Mexico. Do I need a passport? If so, what is the quickest way to get one? Thank you!

  1. yes you need a passport. as an american in a foreign country it is needed. fastest way is the 11 day rule. contact the us dept of state web site search passports.  you go to the passport agency in person with your needed docs and can get the passport that day.

  2. You won't need a passport until an undetermined future date, HOWEVER, if you actually read the link provided above, you see that after January 31, 2008 you have to have BOTH a valid ID and your birth certificate.

It's possible they are going to be very lax on this rule because tons of people are going to be clueless about it but you should bring your birth certificate just in case.

There also a wallet sized passport that is less than half the cost of a normal one but only good for Mexico and Canada.  It will become available on February 1st.

If you follow this link (same someone posted above), it says all this.

  3. What Charlie's saying is correct...people just assume you need a passport.  You should be able to pass with ID/ birth certificate.

If you need a passport eventually, i think you can get one fastest in two weeks.  Check the department of state website.

  4. No, No, No! You do not need a passport for LAND or SEA travel to and from Mexico now.  That requirement will not go into effect until a "later" date which has not yet been set, but will definetly be later than next summer.  Some cruise lines want you to have a passport, so it is wise to call and ask their policy.  It currently takes 4 to 6 weeks to process a passport, plus mailing time both ways.  If you pay for expediting, AND the express  mail fees both ways, you can get it in 2 to 3 weeks.  If you plan to do any more international travel, you need to go ahead and apply and get a passport. Next summer there will likely be another grand rush with long waits.  see first site for passport law and 2nd site for application info when needed.
