I have one very large bedroom in my townhouse. At one point it was two bedrooms but the previous owner converted it into one large bedroom. I decided to split it into 2 bedrooms which is what it was before..the new second bedroom has a window, an air vent (a/c heat vent) 2 outlets, and thinking of building a closet. Do I need a permit to convert my bedroom into 2 bedrooms? I have already started it, will I get fined? I live in Whitpain Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania..any help is appreciated, thank you

  2. Normally you do not need a permit in PA if you are not altering the structural integrity of the building. If you are altering the structural integrity, such as a wall, then you would be required to have a permit.

Here is an idea: If you can still see the former owners construction lines where the wall was, photograph them and make two sets of the photos. One set goes into your homeowner file. Take the second set, place the pictures  in an envelope along with a sketch of the proposed project. Take the envelope to your local post office and pay for a manual cancellation/ date stamp ( the purple ink circle) over the envelope seal. Place this set in a secured area like your safe or safety deposit box. This will save you when the town inspector shows up and tries to cite you.

  3. if you are the sole owner of the house you can do whatever you want to it. if you are renting or do not fulling own it you would have to gain acceptance first.
