You need an HDTV.  

Feeding progressive to a TV that is not setup to handle 480p could damage the set.

If your TV has the component video connectors (Red, Blue, and Green) you are good to go.  in at least 480p.  The "p" means progressive vs. "i" which means interlaced.

If you want to use the player in Progressive mode, yes you need a progressive TV.

However, you can use the player in regular mode on any TV.

a progressive scan player will play just fine on any tv. what will affect your picture quality is your cables and how well your tv picks up the 3:2 pull down. you will need to read the specs and reviews on the tv to find this out. but any tv will work
