Question:

Do I need a receiver that will decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD if I have a Playstation 3?

I have a Playstation 3 and am looking to buy a receiver. I'd like to get the full audio capabilities from it (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD) and want to make sure that I don't need a receiver that comes with a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Decoder. I've read a few threads that say all I need to do is purchase a receiver that is HDMI compliant because the Playstation will decode Dolby and DTS internally then send it PCM to the receiver. Am I correct in assuming that I can purchase a less expensive receiver that doesn't have the HD decoders built-in? I've been looking at the Onkyo605 (which has HD decoders), but don't think I need one that high end. Any help would be appreciated!

  1. Most decent receivers support Dolby In digital format but not all support DTS, like DVD's chances are you will find a lot more games supporting dolby digital rather then DTS.

PCM is only for dual channel sound, True HD is not PCM its Lossless 5.1/7.1 audio.

  2. Because the PS3 decodes the new audio formats and sends them as PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) then all you will need is a reciever that is HDMI 1.1 or higher compliant.  So you could easily buy last years model reciever that are 1.1 and still get the lossless audio.  The Onkyo 605 is 1.3 compliant.

So when shopping new or used just make sure it is HDMI 1.1, 1,2 or 1.3 and you will be good to go.

  3.     You' re correct, you just need an HDMI receiver that supports audio via HDMI.

  4. Yes, all you need is something that has HDMI and you'll be fine; however, I would recommend getting a decent receiver anyways, since in the future you may be wanting to connect more things to your receiver or may change your mind about how you're doing things and may need to upgrade to a better receiver anyway. Onkyo makes a great product, I myself am planning to buy the TX-SR705 (the 605 would be fine too, but my budget is around $550 and that's what the 705 is). In addition to the great features of the 605 the 705 is also THX certified which means it has better quality audio all around and will decode THX sources the way they're meant to be. Also the 705 has three HDMI inputs rather than two. Though if all you need is two then the 605 is probably the best choice for the price. I'd recommend going on Amazon and reading reviews on there for the receiver you're thinking about buying; A link to the 605 is below. Good luck!
