Do I need a second water meter if I am installing a sprinkler system?

I am getting a house built and I am planning to get a sprinkler system installed. I heard from a friend that its better to get a second water meter specifically for the sprinkler system. Do I really need this and why is it beneficial? How much money can I save?

Second, do I tell my builder to install a second water meter or the company that is installing the sprinkler system?

(I live in Columbus, Ohio)

  1. Wouldn't make any sense to have two meters. best time to run your sprinklers,  late at night or just before daylight. as there is a minimum charge for each meter you would wind up paying two charges all winter long (not saving but spending more). the sprinklers won't drop your pressure enough to bother you, especially if you use a timer on the system,so it don't run when you shower.

  2. Are you thinking of a fire sprinkler system?  If so, you should speak with both your water purveyor and the fire department.  They are the only ones who can give you specific advice.

Often the fire sprinkler system dictates a larger service than the domestic use does.  However, in most jurisdictions you can use a combined service to the house, and split off for the sprinkler system there.

Be prepared to pay an increased charge for the larger meter, unless your water purveyor is better than most.  It is ironic that if you install a fire sprinkler system, you lessen the use for large quantities of water to put out a fire.  Yet the water companies jump on the larger meter to rake in a few extra bucks.

  3. If this is a new build when you get the water meter installed have them put 2 in and have them designate the one that will go to the sprinkler system. The advantage to this is if you are going to have to pay for all the sewer that is recorded buy the meter that only goes to your house. The other one will be designated for landscape only and no sewer charge on your bill. If you look at your current water bill the sewer charge is almost as much as the water usage. So on a new build if you are going to put in a sprinkler system or pool where you are going to use a lot of water yes it will be to your advantage.
