  1. Only if you want financing from the dealer or the bank.  If you can pay cash, you don't need one.


  2. Depends on where you live... there are "buy here, pay here" lots all over the southwest advertising "no SS# needed". It's unethical and a slap in the face to those who do it correctly, but it's there nonetheless.

    If you mean "through a reputable bank", the answer is yes, you do need a SS#.

    If you're just purchasing, then NO.

  5. I have sold cars many times to foreign nationals with out a Social Security number, all of these vehicles were sent south of the boarder. The others have assumed that you were planning on seeking finance here and that would require you to have a number, but that wasn't your question. Your question was do you need a number and the answer is no you do not.
