you only need to apply for a visa if you will be there longer than 3 months. any longer you will have to apply for a visa with the spanish consulate and once in spain an NIE (numero de identificacion extranjero = foreign identification number) from immigration.

I was there for a month, and didn't need anything special.

I also lived there for a year as a student, and back in those days, you didn't need anything but yourstudent ID.  (from a Spanish University), and, in fact, no one ever questioned me.
