Question:

Do I need a visa to visit England if, over the past year I have already spent appr. 6 months there?

Since this time last year I've visited England on three different occasions, with the cumulative stays being close to six months. I've been back in the States now for three months or so but am planning to return to England the end of this month. I know you don't typically need a visa for stays under 6 months but I'm confused as to whether that is per visit or cumulative over a year. One site mentioned 180 days(visa free) per 365 days which would lead me to think I need a visa. I have no intention of seeking employment (or public assistance) and will be staying with a friend (British). If I do need a visa - what kind ? A follow up question: if I don't need a visa now but later decide I want to stay longer than 6 months what would I need to do?

  1. I would think you might have trouble getting a visa now since you have just about used up your 180 days for the year.  Best to contact the nearest consulate and ask...as this is an unusual situation.
