Also does this vary whether I am working as a photographer privately or for another company?

Thanks

  1. An ABN may not be needed on a one-off basis if you can class this as a hobby - but then you cannot claim expenses etc.

If you intend to work for another company as a contractor or continually on a casual basis - AND you wish to be able to claim expenses (consumables & travel costs etc) then you definately will need an ABN - but depending on your estimated income you may not need to be GST registered.

The ATO website has loads of info for small business.

Just remember to keep good records of your expenses and income and put away approximately 20% of your earnings to cover taxes that may occur at the end of the tax year.
