Do i need an after market head unit on a 02 Ford Explorer if Im installing 1 Kicker L7 and a 1000 watt amp?

  1. It is advised, but not required.

    To hook up an amp to your factory stereo you will need to splice into the signal to the rear speakers.  If your amp accepts speaker level inputs you can hook this directly to your amp.  Otherwise you will need a speaker to line level converter to drop the level.


  2. definetely that way you can better control the sound because the aftermarket head units have more rms power and clarity also they offer better eq modifications so that you can control your bass

  3. given the reputation of ford and their suppliers, it is always best to upgrade the head unit ANY time you put a large stereo system in the vehicle. typically because factory equipment does not include pre amp outputs or optimum clarity on mid and high end outputs. (this is actually true in any car make, i just dislike fords...sorry...)
