Do I need an immigrant visa to adjust my status to that of lawful permanent resident or will an approved I-130/immigrant visa number suffice?

Can I adjust my status from within my country and then travel to the U.S. with just my passport as a lawful permanent resident?

In case I’m ineligible for an immigrant visa.

  1. To adjust status you must be physically present in the United States.

If you plan on coming to the United States you must wait for your I-130 to be complete and the visa issued to you.  Just because an I-130 is approved does not mean a visa is immediately available.

When you adjust status, from inside the United States, the immigrant visa must be immediately available.  There's no ability to "wait" for the visa to become available.
