Hi I have a Sony 32" 720p model KDL32ML130 tv. Right now the dvd player hooked up to it is a Sony DVP-nc685v, capable of progressive scan to 480p. My question is, is it necessary that I buy one of those upconverting dvd players that convert to 1080i for the TV I have?

  1. You can if you want. I would put the money into a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.

The war is still going on and if you choose one or the other... Someone will tell you they think the other is better.

But if you want to know if you should upgrade to a Upconverting DVD player. Save your money. The 480P your using is a nice player for what you have.

    After reading your edit:

I think you are making a wise decision.

Giving the war a little more time will only help you make a better decision and save you money.

  2. First, no need to buy a 1080i upscaling DVD when your tv only supports 720p. The Philips DVP5960 is a good unit for what your wanting. 720p can be achieved via VGA so you should be OK with what you have in the way of cables.

NEXT PART IS FOR HIGHER QUALITY DVD PLAYER

With no solid decision on Blu-Ray or HD [it will be HD] the best 1080p upscaling DVD player, imho, is the Oppo DV-980H for 169.00 from http://www.oppodigital.com/.

An upscaling DVD is like a cheap scanner that boasts high resolution via interpolation [i.e. 1200dpi scanner for 29.00 just isn't real]. It takes the DVD info and fills in the missing info with surrounding pixel info. So basically, you're increasing the size of the picture and to not loose resolution, it fudges in the missing info.

With that said, the hardware you choose should be one better than those you get at Wal-mart or even Circuit City and Best Buy. The 980 from Oppo has been rated over and over and it's the best bang for the buck. PLUS, you get an HDMI cable with it which costs you around 30 bucks. So if you buy a low end unit for say 120 then spring another 30 for the cable to get the 1080 resolution you're at the price of this unit.

I have it, I love it, and until HD comes down to 99 I will not get another unit.
