Do I need insurance right away after I get my license?

Im 16 and want to get my license. I am able to get it but my parents say I will have to be put on their insurance right away if I get my license. Is this true? Why would it be this way when I dont even have a car? I live in MN..

u have to get insurance to drive at all

Yes, you will need to be on their insurance, infact even if you are driving it as a learner, you will still need to be on the insurance.

So you & the car will be covered in case of an accident. All regular drivers of a car are supposed to be listed on the insurance.
