I know it need building permission but how about planning permission?

I need to retile the roof so it seems a good idea as it would give me more loft space and make any future loft conversion easy

  1. Not necessarily; you have permitted development rights on roof extensions, although this depends on a number of factors.  I would contact your local planning department - they should have a duty planning officer who could help and answer your query over the phone - don't take any notice of the other answers; I'm a Chartered Town Planner!

  2. yes,cos you are changing structural stability of house

  3. Ask the local planning office.

I strongly suspect that it won't be worth it economically.

  4. Unless you live in a "Historic District" you can do what you want.  In a Historic District , the town or the neighbors have decided that the area is so unique that it shouldn't be disturbed.

Get the permit, tho .  You said you would.
