Question:

Do I need planning permission to fit two floodlights above my doorway?

We have two floodlights angled down and pointing back in towards our building to illuminate both our doorway, which has trouble with youths soiling it etc., and as a benefit, a sign above the door. This is incidental to the security lights. Am I right in saying that if the lights are primarily to provide security for the doorway, then I don't need planning permission?

  1. Well if you live in England, and you're having problems with youths cr@pping in your doorway then you probably will need planning permission.  You see, these 'children' come from a deprived neighbourhood which for some reason or other requires them to back one out onto your doorstep (I'm not too sure of the connection here but I'm sure a social worker will put you right on this).

Anyway, as president of the 'Equal rights for g*y Whales' commission, I'm sure you'll realise that I can't stand here all day talking about your problems.  But please bear in mind.  If your doorway has steps then, does it have a handrail?  You might also consider providing a safety helmet to all prospective callers.

    Hope this helps.

    Andy.

  2. you don't need planning permission for any non- permanent structure under 14 feet high

  3. You do not need planning permission Usually as long as they don't effect anyone else, nor do the council receive complaints. If they were commercial style lamp posts then you may do.

Do NOT buy the 500watt halegon type, they will almost heat up your garden, so uneconomical.

You should buy low energy ones, there are loads to see.

Yes, you should tell the council that they have been fitted as a security measure to avoid previous vandalism caused by Youths.
