this is an additional question from my previous one...My drive is stuck in reverse and will not shift...I have checked the cables from throttle / shift control to the shift control box (rear of engine) all is good, checked from shift control box to the outdrive,,,works pull one cable the small gear turns on what is called a rack connected to a cylinder or plunger....that is where I suspect the problem is because the plunger is very difficult to move,,,,however if it is hydraulically assisted, would the boat motor need to be running to have the power to move cylinder/plunger... that is where I am at the lower drive and manual is vague as it explains many different types of outdrives from 1964-1986...is there a manual available for just the mechanical drives from 78-81?

  1. You are correct about the stiffness of the shifting because they are hydraulically assisted when the engine is running. If it will

not shift from reverse to neutral by pulling one end of the cable

you either have a problem with the cable mechanism or the shift plunger. It may also be a gear problem. If you remove the cable mechanism you should be able to pull the cables in and out easily. To check the shift plunger try pushing it in and out to

see if it will shift. To take the drive apart the only speciality tool you will need is a large pair of snap ring pliers.Good luck.

  2. Try a OMC repair shop they have manuals some where>
