Question:

Do I need the medical payments option?

I bought a motorcycle, and could not insure it under my parents auto insurance since their company does not insure motorcycles. I have liability to others, uninsured motorist, underinsured motorist coverage, and comprehensive. Since I am covered through my parents health and auto insurance, do I need medical payments on my plan.

I live in Wisconsin.

The bike is paid in full, which is why I do not have collision insurance.

  1. Well, medical payments coverage on your parents auto policy will not extend to injuries involving your motorcycle.  It is excluded.  Also, medical payments coverage does not have a deductible or co-payments like health insurance does so I would consider purchasing it.  It will also cover any passenger you have riding your motorcycle with you.  Your passenger may or may not have health insurance.

  2. You do not need the med pay coverage but it is in your best interest.  In most cases, health insurance will only cover up to 80% of your medical bills where as Med Pay will pay 100% of your medical bills up to your policy limit.  Why is this important?  Consider the following scenario.

Lets say you get in an accident on your bike and you sustain serious injuries.  (On a motorcycle, this is a very real possibility.  It is very unlikely you will walk away from a motorcycle accident without significant injuries).  Lets say your medical bills add up to $50,000.00.  Your health insurance is going to pay $40,000.00 and you will be responsible for the additional $10,000.00. On the other hand, if you have a med pay policy with a policy limit of $50,000 or more, the med pay policy will pay all of your medical bills.  Unless you can easily afford to spend $10,000.00 it is in your best interest to have the med pay policy.

  3. You do not need medical payments if you have health insurance.  Your Med payments coverage will cover your passenger though.
