Question:

Do I need the original title on a vehicle before I can get a rebuild title in Colorado?

My in-laws gave us a truck that they bought ten years ago and defaulted on the loan, so they don't have the title. It doesn't run but we are looking to fix it up and register it in our names through a salvage or rebuild title. What all needs to be done to make this work? And is there a better/easier/faster way to make it legally our vehicle?

  1. Sorry, but the bank still holds title to the truck. They may have not repo'd the truck but a loan is still outstanding on it.

Your in-laws need to go to DMV and have them run a vin check on the truck. They will need ID and proof that the truck is registered to them. Than DMV can advise you of the status  and leinholder.
