Do I need the regular RCA plugs plugged in for sound if I have a Digital Optical cable hooked up?

I want to buy a digital optical cable for my Xbox 360 to hook up to my Sony home theater for true surround sound.

No you don't need the RCA cable if you already have the optical cable plugged in. optical is the best in digital sounds beside the coaxial cable which is another digital hook up you can use if available you will never go back to RCA because it's analog to prove a point try listening to the sources one at a time RCA cables first with out the optical cable than optical to hear which is better.
