Question:

Do I need thermal innerwear (Long John etc) apart from a down-jacket in 0-6 degree Celcius?

Am travelling to Milan where average temperature is 0-6 degree celcius. Have bought a good down-jacket. But don't know whether I need long-john (thermal innerwear) as well. Will just jeans be sufficient for legs?

  1. Long Johns are old school. Buy the military cold weather clothing. (ECWC) It is heavy weight  polypropylene, it wicks moisture away and will keep you warmer and dryer than long johns.

  2. yes--better more then less

  3. I live in Milan. During the day, the temperature is 15 degree celcius, isn't so cold. A down-jacket is ideal, but if you arent' used to a cold temperature, you should have a thermal innerwear.

I use jeans everyday and they're sufficent. Don't worry.

  4. In a word....YES !

  5. I live in Northern BC Canada, and I don't put on my long johns until-20. I guess I'm used to it. Jeans are plenty. I find if you keep you head, feet and hands warm, it's all good.

  6. i would definitely get thermals, you want your whole body warm, not just half.

  7. It was -8 today where I live, and I was fine in jeans.

Then again, I might just be used to it.

If you're not used to cold weather you might want to take a pair just in case.

If it's windy, it will be colder, so take a hat that covers ears, a scarf, and mittens.

  8. You don't need them. 0 to 6 degrees Celcius is the same as 32 to approximately 42.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If you'd wear thermals in that temperature range for comfort then bring them. I live about 2 hours east of Milan and have never needed thermals here.

  9. go and bring it. if you never use then give to goodwill (only if you dont use them) you also dont want to get there and FRZZZZZZZ.

  10. yes they would be good enough to get you by during a winter in Italy. I don't think it gets to cold there during the winters. Although that might just be cause I came from Sicily : D

  11. That and more if you are not used to the cold.
