Question:

Do I need to apply for grants for college in the state of North Dakota?

I recently filled out my FAFSA and got my financial aid award notice. I was surprised to see that I did not receive any grants since my sister (with the same family income) did. Her expected family contribution was also higher than mine. Anybody have any idea what's wrong here?

  1. I would double check the data on both SAR's (FAFSA's) for accuracy.  Once time I saw one that was denied grants because the girl accidentally put the "Cents" on the form.  Instead of mom making 18,000 a year, fafsa said she made 1,800,000 a year.

There is no "Cents" in financial aid.

Do BOTH of your fafsas indicate TWO members of the family in college?  (this makes a big difference)

Do BOTH fafsas indicate the correct number of household members?  (Both parents if they are married (2), you and your sister (+2) , and any other siblings you have in the home or out of the home if they are under 24 and in college?)

Did she have a significantly less amount of earned income than you?  (this too, makes a big difference)

Or did you have a significantly higher amounts listed on worksheets A, B or C than you?  Like child support paid or received, Work Study, ssi or ssd?

Did you accidentally indicate you were a graduate student or had already earned a bachelors degree?  (Grad students don't qualify for federal grants)

If you still aren't sure, i would contact the schools fin aid office and have them review your fafsa info for a mistake.
