Question:

Do I need to be online to Install audio/video codecs in Ubuntu?

I have most of the information I need and the command needed for the command line codecs such as mp3 support...

I am currently online at work and wondering if I need to be online to download and install these codecs (such as plugins for GStreamer), or if they are already on my system, but dormant until active...

If I need to be online, is there anywhere that I can find the files I need so I can download at work (through windows) and then take them home?

Please help, I have had Ubuntu for less than 24 hours!

  1. search the ubuntu forums, every thing you need, mind it took me three weeks to get mine working, good luck, better than windows when working!

  2. If you would like a nicely configured Ubuntu system, then go to http://www.howtoforge.com and navigate to the Ubuntu section. Scroll down a couple of pages and you will see "The Perfect Desktop, Ubuntu" That will sort you out nicely if you follow these instructions. And yes, you do need to be online for this.
