Question:

Do I need to buy a HDTV with a built-in tuner if I have DirecTV?

And if I don't, how do I connect my DirecTV box to my new HDTV without a tuner? And will my old one work? My old DirecTV box has a "Satellite In" (regular cable jack), a "To TV" (which is another cable jack to tv), and 2 red, 2 white, and 2 yellow audio/video jacks.

Thanks!

  1. no! your direct tv is a digital tuner for the satellite television. if you ever decide to get rid of direct tv and your old television dosen't have a built it digital tuner than you may need to buy one.

  2. As others said, your DirecTv box IS the tuner. You need to connect one of the sets of yellow/red/white outputs from the box to the corresponding "composite" inputs on your TV. And then set the TV to its AV channel.

Note that you won't get an HD picture this way. Composite cables can only carry SD. You'd need either component (RGB) or HDMI cables for HD. Of course you'd also need HD service from DirectTV and an HD box.

Don't be surprised if standard resolution DirecTV content looks really fuzzy on a large HD screen.

  3. no, the directv set-top-box is the tuner.

  4. no

  5. You need to have an HD Direct tv box in order to view direct tv HD channels.

Your tv does not have to have an HD tuner but must be in HDTV in order to view HD channels. Also if your tv is not in HDTV it does not matter if you have an HD DirectTv box you will not be able to view HD channels.

The only reason you would need an HD tuner inside your HDTV is if you wanted to view local HD channels without a box.

  6. No, your satellite receiver acts as a tuner.

Most tv's come with tuners already these days though, so you will probably just end up with two tuners.

You might want to consider getting a tv with a tuner just because of the fact you might not always have Direct TV.
