  1. No, you don't have to buy a prepaid card.

    There are some phones, especially in the rural areas that still use coins BUT more and more, the phones are switching over to the card style. All of the phones on the shinkansen (bullet train) for example, are card phones. My advice would be to buy a phone card anyway because if you are stuck and the nearest phone uses coins then you always have those, but if it uses a card and you have none, then you will really be stuck.


  2. No, pay phones still take coins. In a coffee shop or bar you might still see one of the pink phones with a rotary dial that runs on ten yen coins.
