Do I need to change my license if I am moving to different state?

Question

I am currently living in Milwaukee. WI but soon (very soon) I will be moving to Chicago, IL. There I will start my college..

I just renewed my WI license and I am not sure if I need to change my WI license to IL license if I will be living in IL..or maybe I can just use my WI license...

Also, I just got a new car and my new plates..they are also WI plates..is it necessary to change plates for me..I mean do I need IL plates if I currently using WI plates?

Basically, do I need to change my license and my car plates if I am moving to different state?

Check with the IL DMV, but usually students attending school out-of-state do not have to apply for a license or register their vehicles there. Same with the military.

Yes.  30 days is usually the time frame ot change your DL and your plates.  You can research this online before you move.

Yes you have to change plates and your license to IL. Once you move and have an address you have about 3 months to do this b/c after 3 months you become a resident in that state. I also use to live just outside milwaukee. My husband & I lived in Oak Creek.

If your official present residence is in Milwaukee and you will merely be attending college in Il, you need change nothing.  If/when you stay down in FIB land and are through with school, then get a FIB drivers license and license plate

It depends.

If you are simply going to be studying in one state, you aren't deemed to be a resident of that state and don't need to get new plates and a new license.  

For instance, your "home" is in WI, but you're staying in the dorms of the University of Chicago, you don't need to do a thing, as you aren't a "resident" of Chicago.  

However, if you accept employment while you are there, then you do.
