Do I need to clean or scrub stovetop electric heating elements? If so, how?

I just acquired a filthy used stove and oven.

  1. You don't need to scrub the electric heating elements. You, however, need to clean the surrounding area especially the pan. I just restored an old electric stove with only vinegar, baking soda and aluminum foil.

  2. There's no need to scrub the heating elements.  Any crud on them will burn off.  You could do that without actually cooking anything, just turn the burners on (to about medium) with no pots or pans on them.  .    

  3. If there is food on the stovetop, when you use it, it will burn on there and smell awful. It could potentially be a hazard, so I suggest cleaning it. I usually just use a rough sponge and some Soft Scrub and it cleans up nicely.

  4. Provided that your stove is not connected and switched on, then by all means go clean the elements. They are generally the cleanest part of the stove because the dirt get burnt off all the time, but take care simply wipe with a soapy cloth, ...  

  5. my mom puts hers in the dishwasher. it seemed weird to me but she has never had a problem.
