Question:

Do I need to do Force Recon to become a USMC Scout Sniper?

I'm shipping out for Boot Camp in three weeks.

My research is giving me conflicting information. On one hand my original impression was that I needed to go Force Recon to become a Scout Sniper. Now, with further research, I'm not so sure.

I found a checklist saying I needed to be in the 1st Grade in my PT, Expert Rifleman, and have all the qualifications of an Infantryman. There was no mentioning of Force Recon and the In-Doc.

Anyways, yes or no? Force Recon to become a Sniper? Or merely finish Infantry School?

  1. No, you do not need to "do" Force Recon to be a sniper.

But don't get your hopes up.  There is no enlistment option for the Sniper MOS.  Competition for this MOS is very, very high.

Sniper school is very demanding, physically and mentally.

You may get into a STA platoon and never become a sniper.

Your task now is to do the very, very best you can in Boot Camp to become the best infantry Marine you can possibly be.

    Good luck.

  2. What you can do is, finish boot camp with those requirements listed, like expert marksman, and when your done with infantry school and you join a unit, your unit will have a sniper team and you can apply to join them, you have to go through there sniper training, which is rigorous.

or i think you can be a force recon sniper, but im not to sure how that works.

  3. Just excel in recruit training and qualify expert on the range.

  4. Err No, why would you want to work so hard for Force RECON and then want Scout Sniper?

Force RECON is like one of the best special operation force in the Marines right after MARSOC probably.

  5. no you dont..Force Recon is harder than being a scout sniper so that wouldnt make any sense...that would be like requiring Army Ranger candidates to be Green Berets first.to be a scout sniper you must have a 1st class PFT, expert rifleman, and have an 03XX MOS AKA infantry..after that you can attempt the STA Indoc and if you make it then they send you to the Army sniper school i think and if you pass that they bring you back and do additional Marine Corps sniper training..at least thats my understanding of it..
