Do I need to get a license to sail in Connecticut, or only if I wanted to use a motorized boat?

Also, what age do I need to be to sail, and do I need an adult if i am 14?

  1. If the sailboat is over 19 1/2 feet, you need a Safe Boaters Certificate.  They accept SBCs from some other states (NY, MA,RI).  CT SBC is not age restricted and is valid for life.  If you are going to sail ANY size boat, I would strongly recommend getting your state's SBC, and probably take a sailing class and/or get certified.  I have ASA certifications; I know the Basic Keelboat certification is recognized by most states as an SBC.
