Question:

Do I need to get my wisdom teeth removed?

I have an appointment on friday with my dentist to remove two of my wisdom teeth. It's pretty expensive and I'm not sure if I really need to do it. I know a lot of people that say that not everyone needs to remove their wisdom teeth. My dentist said something about my wisdom teeth growing in crooked but I haven't felt any pain at all. So should I get them removed? I'm 17 by the way, if that makes a difference.

  1. If you have enough room in your mouth then you don't need to get them removed.  Dentists like to have them removed so they can make a few bucks out of it.  You and your parents should look at the x-rays and see if they are coming in straight and if you have enough room to keep them.  If not, get them taken out.  If so, then live with them.  I am ALOT older than you and still have my wisdom teeth and plan to never have them taken out.

  2. If you've ever had braces on your teeth, this may be a reason the dentist is recommending that you get them taken out.  If they grow in crooked they can shift your teeth again.  Thats why I had mine out.

  3. If they grow in crooked there is a possibility that they could shift your teeth or even cause an infection. The earlier you get them out the better. It's true that not all people have to get them out (my dad still has his), but if you wait till they bother you, it may be harder to heal (the older you are, the longer the healing process is). Good luck, and don't worry about it, you'll be fine!
