I'm leaving to go on a cruise from Ft. Lauderdale next month to Mexico (I think we stop in Belize City or something like that) and need to know if I need to be able to speak Spanish or at least a little in order to communicate when the ship docks and we go on excursions.

  1. No, you don't need to know another language. All the ship personnel and the tour operators are fluent in English. You may have to listen a little harder because of accents, but these people speak English better than some of the folks I work with!

But they always appreciate it if you learn a few phrases in their language. Hello, Thank You, You're Welcome and Good By are simple ones to learn.

  2. nope.  the staff is fluent in english.  when going our on your shore excursions, travel with the ship.  i toured all over panama and it was all in english.

  3. NO!!   I have been on about 20 cruises and all over the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe and never did I need to know how to speak the languages.  People in most countries other than the US learn to speak English as well as their native language.  And that is especially true if they work in the tourism business or have vendor stands in the markets.  The tour guides on the buses and tour know English very well and many even know a couple other languages in addition to Spanish and/or French and/or Portuguese.

  4. No, you'll do just fine.  We just got back from our first cruise and had no problem communicating with those around us.

    Have fun.

  5. No- their main business is tourism so they all speak english at the port.

  6. NO...lucky for you! Almost everyone you come in contact with will know english...even a little. Esp the people who will assist you....Belize City is very beautiful and fun! The people are great as well! Have fun!!
