Question:

Do I need to pay extra for the Car Registration and Plate?

Hello,

I am going to buy a car, and i inspected one last night, it was good i think. But the car owner said this car did not have registration for a year, because he did not drive the car at all. And the car did not have a plate either.

I know even if the car has Registration, if i want to renew, i have to pay about $600 a year. But for this case, if i buy that car, and i have to regist the car, so do i just pay about $600 for one year Registration, or i have to pay some extra money?(because this car did not have Registration before)

If i regist the car, will i get a general plate for free, or i have to pay for it? Does the vicroad give me the random car plate, or i can choose the three letters and numbers which i like?

I saw the EURO plate price is $395, if i buy it, do i just simplay put on my car or i have to pay extra for putting on my car? One of my friend told me you pay $395 is just your personal plate, if you want to put it on your car you have to pay $100 more.

Thanks for read the looooooooooooooooooong questions.

Thank you.

  1. When you buy a used vehicle of any sort it has to come with a ownership that has the previous owners name on it and is signed over by them to you. Then the ownership will indicate if the car is certified or not and if it was then plate stickers will be on the back stating when it was last plated.

I highly recommend a book called the Lemonade book bec it is a true eye opener and a great buyers tool of info.

Sounds like the seller is trying to tell you that bec the car hasn't been plated in over a yr or so then the car isn't considered certified anymore in his name.So when the ownership states certified and valid plates held very rescently then you could go get a transit sticker so you could drive it for a limited stated time so you can get a chance to certifie it.

So basically it sounds like hes selling you a car you'll need to have towed to the repair shop so it can be certified and then plated by you.

Keep in mind that you have to register the car either with a certification slip and ownership in your name with usaully 30 days but laws vary.

Once you try to register it then you'll pay the DMV's book value on taxes unless the law states otherwise due to the age of vehicle. So if the book says your car has a book value of say 2,500 then you'll pay taxes on that price.Plus if older car most of the time you'll pay the taxes on the purchase price and the price indicated by your receipt.

Basically once taxes and ownership is payed for and car is certified then you can buy plates for the vehicle and but of course prrof of insurance is required.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way always check the yr of the car by looking at the inner doors by the lock assembly or on the reflectors or the markers etc.Plus be sure you check the mileage and the Vin number that is upfront on the dash close to the bottom of the windshield, plus make sure you get a proper reciept and ownership that has been signed over by the right person.

It's always a good idea to bring any ID you have with you when going to the ministry of transportation etc.

  2. If the car has no plate or registration that means he doesn't have the pink slip that you have to have when you registered it at DMV

You should never have to pay $600 a year that is too much//

RUN from that deal it is a bad one.

Where do you live it is only 109 for my personal plate a year and it was only $40.00 to get it.

  3. I would be suspicious of any car that hadn't been on the road for a year, plus cars deteriorate quickly when they're not used, seals dry out, bearings rust etc.

You would need to have a vehicle roadworthy before registering, this may uncover a huge amount of faults, rego is correct, some states allow quarterly and half yearly rego, you have to buy your plates, $21 in SA, plus transfer costs.

I would suggest to the owner that they have the roadworthy done before you buy, this is valid for 30 days in most states.
