Do I need to pay someone or subscribe to a service in order to use a "hotspot" with my Wi-Fi enabled laptop?

  1. It depends...Some WiFi hot spots are open for use by the Public, and require NO authorization to use them.  Places such as the library, Internet Cafes,  Air Port Terminals, or some Bookstores are usually open.  

    If it is a Neighbors unsecured network, then you should get permission from him/her to use it.

    Most WiFi hot spots are secured to prevent unauthorized use, but some people just forget (are too lazy) to secure them, but by law (U.S.) you still cannot use them without permission.


  2. Depends on the hotspot. Some are free, some are private. The private ones are easily identifiable: they are encrypted; to use them you pay a fee and receive a password.
