Question:

Do I need to register firearms that I inherited?

My father was a police officer and he passed away when I was 11. When I became an adult, my mother gave me a few firearms (rifles and a couple pistols) that were his. I live in Texas. Do I need to register them or fill out any kind of form to formally transfer ownership?

If so, please cite your source when replying.

  1. You do not need to register them in Texas

You do need to be 21 to own the handguns

You might consider just getting a letter from your mom with a list of the makes, models, and serial numbers and what day she transferred them to you.

There is no other paperwork you need to do at all.

    vangion -

I stand corrected. you are correct.

21 to purchase from an FFL 18 to posses and private party transfer. Thanks for the Heads up. I forgot about the FFL stipulation to the statutes.

  2. nope, they are yours and you don't have to do anything.

  3. Even in New Jersey you don't have to register them and you can't do anything here.

  4. No registration is required in Texas, I have several guns I got when my grandfather passed away and have never had any problems

  5. If firearms of any kind are a bequest & a permit or license is required for any of them, you must comply w/ local regs.

you  may need to put them in "safekeeping" w/ local police until they can be registered in your name at the legal age reqd.

The the guns are your property & Eg  they may be sold to an authorized dealer without ever  having been registered in your name.

Nice to have a copy of the will .

Officials can make it as sticky as they want to , but since dad

was a policeman, would not expect it.

    Best regards

  6. In the state of Texas, you do not have to re-register firearms that you have bought, inherited, or found.  However, if you want to change the firearms over into your name, find a local FFL, and they will be able to do it for you.  When buying and selling from person to person, no paperwork is actually needed, but a transfer of ownership and registration is possible.

  7. Any firearm that was inherited to you by your father, there is no need to register them.

  8. i'd ask the state of texas

if you want them to know you got them

i know here in va we trade guns and dogs and bows nobody cares

  9. There is no registration in Texas therefor there is no need and usually no way to register them or to transfer ownership

If for any reason the police run the nubers on your guns they will be checking the stollen gun database to see if they have been reported not to see if you are the registered owner

    And

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 21 TO OWN HANDGUNS IN TEXAS

I wish otherwise knowledgeable people would stop spreading this disinformation

  10. There is no registration in Texas.

I think the transfer of property firearms or otherwise would be covered in probate court.

  11. Nope. there is no need to register them.
