Do I need to remove the composite siding to attach a ledger board to my house. I am building a pergola?

Your ledger can attach directly to the composite.  Remember to install flashing between the ledger and the siding to avoid any minor moisture infiltration, similar to the flashing you would install when constructing a deck.  Alternatively, you could install posts at the house if it would fit with your plan and have the pergola support itself rather than breach the siding.

  3. Since a pergola will not have a solid roof, it will not have a problem with gaining weight from snow. So your load is minimal. You can attach directly through the ledger board into the wall studs or plates. Best results use lag bolts and washers 2 to 3 inches longer than the width of the ledger board you are putting up. Also if the siding is at an angle, you can fill in the void with shims so the ledger mounts perpendicular to the wall. Drill holes through the siding to avoid splitting.
