Do I need to rent a car for a Vancouver vacation?

I'm visiting vancouver in two weeks.

I saw that most of the attractions are dowtonw, still I would like to visit:

Capillano Bridge

Grouse Mountain

Chinatown

etc, etc

Does public transportation, sky train....go to those places?

Yes, you can get to those places by transit. Just don't plan on getting to all of them in one day. Grouse Mountain is a day trip of its own. I wouldn't rent a car unless I was in a hurry or wanted to go to places further out.

You do not need a rental car for the things you list, and a car is an outright nuisance in the city. Parking is rare and expensive, and the traffic patterns in Vancouver, particularly the west end, are nerve wracking. Between skytrain, seabus,  and the bus system, it is possible to get almost anywhere in the city.

Be sure to investigate day passes on the transit system as they can save you money and time.

If you plan to be in Vancouver for more than a few days, rent a car for the latter part of your visit and go outside the city. There is some stunning country just a short distance away, and getting to it it requires a car. My suggestion would be to take a long day trip, or perhaps spend the night, and drive to Whistler up Howe Sound through Squamish.

Public transportation does indeed go to all of these places. However, if you actually want time to see these places, rent a car anyway. Even if just for a day to see the more remote attractions. But you may not need one for your entire stay.

I find that airport rentals in Vancouver are competitive with downtown rates, unlike most other cities. But book on line.

By the way China Town is within walking distance of downtown. Just south of Gas Town.
