  1. No it's not necessary, even in the summer because you'll always have a seat. You can buy the ticket in Marseilles St-Charles station.

There are TGV trains between Marseilles and Nice but they don't go high speed because it's not hight speed equipped way. Other trains go the same speed.

    One way is about €30.

  2. There are TGV trains on this run but most are local commuter trains and regional express trains.

  3. There should not be any problem if you don't reserve a seat .

And anyway, there are plenty of trains and if you can't get on one train, you'll get the next ! and meanwhile you 'll enjoy having a drink on the Canebière, facing the Port and Notre Dame de la Garde !

  4. you do not need to reserve, but if you are in marseille stop by the train station & buy your ticket before you leave for nice so no rushing around on the day of departure. you'll just go to the track...

  5. I did some traveling around France about 2 years ago and I was able to get train tickets at the station right before I wanted to leave, so I don't think you need to get a ticket in advance, nor pay to reserve a specific seat.  It was easy enough to find seats for the two of us traveling.
