Question:

Do I need to start a small business to do this?

I'm a stilt walker who enjoys dressing up for Halloween. For the past few years now, I've been doing my "act" at various grocery stores and car dealerships in the area. The owners are usually folks I either know personally or have met at previous engagements. Every year I make a few bucks doing this in my spare time.

This year, I'd like to expand things a bit and see if I can make a bit more money at this.....I'm thinking along the lines of business cards, website, etc....

My question is do I actually have to start a small business in order to accomplish this? If so, could you suggest some good resources for starting up a side "business" like this. I want to make certain that I do everything properly before I dive in (regarding taxes, business licences, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated. ty.

  1. Go to SBA.gov and follow the links under local resource to find a Small Business Development Center in your area for assistance.

The SBDC provides free management consulting services and are an excellent resource for information about starting a business.

    Good Luck!

  2. I'd recommend taking an online business class through your local community college.

I just finished mine and it gave me tons of resources and information for starting a small business.

  3. Go to score.org and in the upper left hand corner, enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will find the SCORE chapter nearest you. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a SCORE counselor.
