Do I need to strip off the old stain before resealing my deck?

I'm resealing my deck with the same color stain. Does the old semi-transparent stain need to be removed completely, or can I just use a deck cleaner/brightener before restaining?

It would be best to sand it before you stain it again.

All loose bits should be removed. Easy way is to rent a power washer. I am in the process of doing my side porch with an automobile power washer and it works great. While the deck is drying go down to your local buiding supply store and get some 80 grit sandpaper. The power washer does tend to raise a few splinters when it hits the wood.
