Ok I wanted to know if it's true that if you get a HS diploma then you don't have to take any ged classes in college?? If so, then why do people always say stuff like the first 1-2 years in college is mostly all ged classes while the other 2-4 years is when you actually start studying your major...but then now I hear people saying that if you have a HS diploma then you don't have to worry about taking geds and can start working on your major/pre-requistes and what not in the first year of college...please be as specific as possible thank you, I just basically want to know if I still have to take geds in college if I have a HS diploma!!

  1. You have to take a bunch of basics before you start your major.

As your teachers said, AP classes get you out of certain hours of those classes.

You will have to take basic eng, math, science, history, n' foreign language.

You will be doing your pre-req. while doing the basics.

Its all pretty easy, but I'd recommend taking them through a community college if you're looking to save money.

  2. Okay, let me help clarify a few things.  What you are hearing is something a bit different than GED classes.  If you have your high school diploma, you're finished with high school.  A GED is like a substitute high school diploma... you do NOT take GED classes in college for college credit.  However, in your first year or two you will be taking a lot of general studies courses... these are for college credit.  Sometimes a student who had poor academic work in high school, say Math for example, and perhaps also scored low in Math on the ACT or SAT,  will have to take REMEDIAL classes at college; these classes are prerequisites required before you take regular college Math coursework.  Remedial classes are NEVER for college credit... so some people call them GED classes, but that's a misnomer.  Remedial classes are simply required by the college to ensure that you are prepared for their Math curriculum.
