Question:

Do I need to twist ABS pipe to seal glue on the joint?

I am installing a P trap in my lavatory and in order to ensure I align the trap with the sink drain, my preference would be to just apply the glue and push the p-trap straight onto the ABS pipe so I do not have any alignment issues (as opposed to pushing it on and giving it a twist).

Previous experience has shown that sometimes you cannot turn the pipe as far as you expected to, and thus you end up with a p-trap that is not perfectly aligned with the drain.

Is the ABS glue good enough to seal without the twist?

  1. bY adding the twist(no matter how slight)the glue track won't go just straight back(meaning if there is a dry spot - no glue then water can flow thru that dry spot giving you a leak)  A slight twisting just ensures the glue is spread all over.

Doesn't have to be a quarter turn or anything like that, just a 1/2 inch movement is enough.

  2. Make a mark on your two pieces of pipe for alignment and just twist 1/4 turn.

  3. The ABS glue is like lube when its wet...So pushing it in is exceptable.  Make sure it goes in far enough so that it gets proper sealing.  U can push as far as it will go...like 3/4" to 1".

  4. if u glue it u won't  be able to take it apart . I do my own plumbing and u just need to slide i on and give it a twist, no glue required.

  5. put the glue on both parts and push straight in . it is not going to leak.  i do it  and no leaks

  6. you don't glue a P-Trap, you need to be able to uncouple it to clean it.

  7. use compression fittings  or pipe clamps with rubber section for trap is more typical, but a good glue job is OK if you don't mind cutting to get in there,

As you probabaly know the trap is primarily to keep some water in pipe between sink and sewer to prevent gases from entering living space, but if hair or whatever clogs it you will wish you didn't glue it
