Question:

Do I need to use a wire cage for my growing jalapeno and Serrano chill pepper plants?

I have planted 4 jalapeno and 6 Serrano chill plants. They are really starting to take off. I am wondering if it's necessary to stake them or put tomato cages around them to support their growth? Also when do these plants start producing peppers right now there is just a lot of flowers on the plants?

Any advice is welcomed.

Thank you!

  1. it wouldn't hurt, or use stakes.  strong winds could get them.  put in cages early for ease of getting plants through them  could also cage every other one if planted close together and just tie to adjacent cage if needed.  I've done that many times.

  2. Chilies have pretty woody stems and you usually don't need to cage them. If they droop a bit a simple stake support should do. If you are getting lots of flowers you are about there, give it a bit more time.
