Question:

Do I need to use grout in repairing shower tile?

I'm patching a few 1" x 1" wall tiles in a shower. Is is OK if I just apply extra mastic/adhesive on the new tiles to fill around them - and skip a separate grouting step? As long as I'm ok with the way it looks.

  1. mastic will dry a yellowish color, so unless your current grout color is yellowish, it won't match.  maintenance wise, if the grout lines are filled completely and smoothed out properly with the mastic, no water should get through, so you shouldn't have any future problems in that area.  if this is the way you want to do it, then go ahead.  i don't agree, but it's your shower.  :)  good luck!

  2. Yes, but make sure you seal the crack good so no water gets into your wall.
