I just bought a brand new Wamsetta cotton blanket from Bed, Bath & Beyond size Queen.

I was told I should wash this blanket like I would brandnew bed sheets. But I don't understand why I should wash a new cotton blanket, do I need to? I don't even bother washing new bed sheets when I buy them from stores...why is that necessary and should I wash my new cotton blanket at all????

No I'm not making a big deal trying to learn hwo I shoudl approach using new bed linens and whether they need to be washed or NOT.

Thanks.

  1. Someone told me once that the manufacturers of clothing and bed linens use formaldehyde in their processing.  Even if that is not true, what does the manufacturer use to get that crisp new feeling so it looks good in the package?  And, is it something I want rubbing against my skin? Rather than take any chances, I wash new things.  I'm going to watch your answers.  Maybe someone can tell us about the manufacturing process.

  2. Yes.  You should wash all new items before use whether it is bedding or clothing or curtains.

  3. The idea is that because cotton is a natural, plant-based fibre, in order for the farmer to make enough out of his crop he needs it to not be eaten by bugs, so it gets sprayed to buggery with chemicals.

The chemicals can be really bad for you (they've caused death in people who wore clothes made from that cotton) and there's also no telling how clean the things they're packaged in are.

That episode of house where the kids get really sick from their jeans is actually a true story and is the example my Mum uses when making me wash my new sheets. Which I still don't do.

I haven't died yet but you never know I guess.
