Question:

Do I need to wear a bathing suit on a boat?

My boyfriend is buying a boat this week maybe. If he wants to take me out on it this weekend I am in trouble. I don't own a bathing suit. I looked at wal-mart and they don't have anything good at least none that will fit me. Is it a must to wear a bathing suit when out on a boat?

Also, I am asking for myself nobody said I had too.

  1. As others have said, if it's a small, "wet" boat, then you'll definitely want a swim suit, or at least clothes that you don't mind getting wet, at least for leaving/returning to the dock (as Carlo C said, often the best bathing suit for a wet boat is no bathing suit at all).

If it's a larger, "dry" boat, you have a lot more options, but a swim suit or lack of one is still usually a good option if the weather's warm enough.

And yes, regardless of the size of the boat, wear a life jacket. They save lives.

  2. Don't wear jeans !!  They get very heavy and take a long time to dry if they get wet.  Just use your head and think to yourself "If I fell over, what would take the shortest time to dry?"  Also, wear layers and bring stuff to change into or put on.  It is always good to have the ability to take stuff off or put stuff stuff on, then to be stuck with no options at all.

Shoes !!  Non - Marring !! Something that will stay on your feet and not fly off.  No flip-flops.  Just go to Wal Mart and get some cheap white bottom tennis shoes that have a flat bottom.  You need sure footing.

If he gets a sailboat (I hope), you will need to get some sailing gloves.  Also, wear as little jewelry as possible and if you have long hair put it in a ponytail or something.  If you wear glasses, use your cheap back-up pair and get a strap to keep them on your head.

One more thing - try and use the "ladies room" before you head out.  Heading out on the water is like a road trip.  You don't know where the next rest area is going to be.

Have fun, be safe.  If you do not know how to swim, please wear your life preserver.  All boats (with some exceptions) must have one life preserver for every person on board and a throwable floatation.

  3. The Big Three:

    1) LIFE JACKET - even if your a good swimmer.

    2) SUN SCREEN - tanned or not you will burn on the water.

    3) CLOTHING - that you dont mind if they get dirty, muddy, wet, or stained - ALSO REMEMBER TO TAKE DRY CLOTHES AS WELL so that if you do get wet you have something to change into, nothing worse than riding home in wet clothes.

Be Safe and Have Fun !!!

  4. If your not a sun goddess best be careful as 1hr in the sun and you will burn> weather depending and water temp> Shorts & sport top will work for swimimg>Long sleve shirt for protection>

  5. If he's getting a 10-15 foot sailboat (a sailing dinghy) then the answer is absolutely yes! If he's getting a "dry" boat, a larger power or sail boat, then you can and should wear something comfortable which allows unrestricted freedom of movement, but not so loose that your clothes can catch on things and be a hazard. On my Catalina 27 sailboat, I wear comfortable pants (sometimes shorts) and a tee shirt, and , of course, a LIFE JACKET. Even if you can swim, please wear one.  :-)

  6. Of course you can wear anything you are comfortable in and don't mind getting wet, even your birthday suit if no one minds...besides, it can get cold sometimes and you should plan for that possibility.

  7. if your going swimming, it is a good idea...How big is the boat?

  8. There are no swimsuits required on any of my boats. Except for the guys.
