Do I need to worry about low coolant level light on in 00' Pontiac Montana?

I have checked the coolant level and there is enough coolant level in, it is up to the cold level line. Also I do not notice any type of leaks from the coolant. And the engine does not run hot, do I need to worry? How can I reset this?

  1. gm has had problems with low coolant lights comming on if the light bugs you you can pull the overflow and tap on senser and light will go out but nothing to worry about

  2. The sensor has probably gone bad.

  3. Keep an eye on it. I presume it has the 3.1 or 3.4 V6 which are notorious for intake manifold gasket failures. A low coolant warning with a loss of coolant, which you may not see as it leaks internally into the crankcase, is often the first sign. Pull your dipstick and make sure your oil is not foamy, which is a sign that coolant has mixed with the oil.

  4. Try disconnecting the negative on your battery and then reconnecting it, this resets your car's functions to original. If the light comes back on after doing this, the sensor is probably bad. Worst case scenario it could be the LIM (Lower Intake Manifold) gasket which is infamous for cracking in GM's 60 degree V6s (3.1, 3.4, 3.8)

  5. Anytime a low coolant light comes on there is a need to be concerned. Make sure that you check the amount of coolant in the radiator, as well as the reservoir tank. If both of those are full and the light is still on, it is possible that the sensor inside the tank has gone bad and will need to be replaced.
