Question:

Do I need to worry about the oozing in my gums?

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday morning. After a couple hours I had to go back to the office because 2 sites wouldn't stop bleeding. I was given sutures at those sites to keep it under control. Three of the sites are fine now but I noticed one site is still a little oozy. I've been biting on teabags for a while now and I think my jaw is a little fatigued from clenching down for such a long period.

Also because of the oozing, is it okay to start with the salt water rinses since it's been a little bit more than a day since they've been removed?

  1. Hello, Yes indeed you can begin the salt water rinses...however you do not want to rinse vigorously and the rinse should be a 10% salt to water combination...After you rinse with it, do not follow by rinsing with plain water and do not eat anything for at least 30 minutes. Do the rinse at least three time daily for the next five day's....The oozing is pretty much normal, especially if you had an abscess or removing the teeth required extensive abuse of the tissue and socket bone...Your say that sutures were placed and tells me that the extractions were not ordinary but rather some what difficult....I also need to tell you that total healing will take between five and six months...that time frame goes for any extraction you might have....During the healing period the tissue and gum bone will undergo changes in both size and shape, the majority of which will take place during the first ninety day's...beyond that the changes will be far slower until complete healing takes place. Good luck and I wish you well.
