Do I need underlay with a hard backed carpet.?

I'm about to replace my foam backed carpet in my livingroom and hall and stairs. I'll be buying a hard backed carpet so will I need underlay as well?

No, but you should put down some padding, Your carpet will rub back and forth on the floor and wear a hole through it faster, The fibers will break down from underside and look like c**p come this winter, I hope all the rubber back came up, and left overs will show through the new carpet, you will have a little hump everywhere you missed.

Carpet is only as good as the padding that is underneath it. Buy the densest best quality padding that you can.
