Question:

Do I need written proof from the U.S consulate?

I called up the visa information center section of a U.S consulate today to enquire about a student visa I got a year back - but could not go to study.

I asked a lady don't I need written proof to show the consular officer that I had already informed the.consulate about my inability to go. She replied no written proof is required and did not give her name when I asked her to.

I had emailed my queries a week back to the consulate but did not get any reply hence I had to call up today.

Would I be asked on the day of my new interview why I did not inform them in advance? because i did but i could not get any proof of it.

Thank you.

  1. The Consulate doesn't care if you didn't use a visa you had in the past. They are concerned about your record in terms of visas that you did use. They'll simply stamp the old visa "canceled without prejudice". You can tell them your story, but what the woman told you on the phone is true. You don't need to notify the Consulate if you are unable to use your visa that was issued.

  2. I'll tell you what they like: email them then when you get the answer, print it out and show it to them. They are very slow with emails but I think they will answer soon. You have to get an answer before you go there because it could be in vain.

  3. My understanding of the function of a US consulate is to assist Americans when they are in that country.  The "written proof" will be in the form of a replaced passport or other document.  I replaced my passport in Israel when it was stolen from my companion's purse.

  4. Be prepared with documents and answers for not using a student visa in your new application.
