Suppose I go on vacation somewhere in Canada, have an accident and am taken to a Canadian hospital. As an American citizen, do I get charged or, like it is for Canadian citizens, is it free?

  1. It's not free -- You have to pay the full amount. Canadians still pay a monthly premium for health insurance, which covers us in case of having to go to the hospital, visit the doctor, etc.

If you are a resident of Canada, you are entitled to participate in provincial medical plans. However, if you are visiting, it is likely that this is not the case.

If you are just visiting you will have to pay the full amount so make sure you have coverage through travel insurance.

  2. You get charged full freight so if you come to canada buy travel

    insurance before you get here.

  3. You will pay through your teeth.  Trust me.  a fellow up our way is American.  He was taken by Ambulance to hospital, and they kept him over night.  No medicines were administered... that would have been extra.  His bill was $1,500.00.    I knew another American who wanted to go to get some flu medicine but needed the appt first.  They wanted $300.00 to walk through the door.

US citizens need to get insurance on a daily basis for any out of country trips, Just as a Canadian does going to USA.  I travel for 4 months of the year.  We do purchase insurance otherwise we would be in the same boat your your country and likewise in many other countries.  Even with insurance we are not supposed to enter a hospital or go to a Doctor outside without the INsurance Companies approval.

  4. yes, but sometimes they don't check your ID
