Question:

Do I qualify for medicaid in TX?

I'm 18 years old, no job (trying to get one), and living with a friend who barely makes $30k a year.

I'm living with a friend because I got kicked out of my parent's home. I need to see a doctor but of course can't afford it. I have no insurance currently.

Would I qualify, or would I have to go on another program?

  1. Not if you're honest.  A household of two people, with $30,000 of income, is too high for Medicaid in TX.

  2. More than likely, yes.  Until you are 19.  Your friend's income will NOT count in that case.

If, for some reason, you are NOT eligible, then you can also apply for the Women's Health Program which pays for birth control, pap smears, and other general well-women checkups.

  3. Here is the website for Texas Medicaid to get information: http://www.hhsc.state.tx.us/medicaid/ind...

More than likely you'll qualify; in most cases they will not look at your friends income.

Contrary to the above answer, you do not need to be on Medicare before you're eligible for Medicaid. In fact, unless you're disabled or have certain health conditions you won't be eligible for Medicare until you're 65 years old.

  4. you have to have medicare to get medicaid! see if you can get ssi and health ins. with them!
